About
It started with a conversation in a Melbourne laneway.
In 2016, while starting an eCommerce consultancy in a CBD coworking space, Ben struck up a friendship with Bill, a young man sleeping rough off Little Bourke Street. Over shared meals, Ben heard a story he couldn't walk away from — not one of bad choices, but of hopelessness. No family. No way forward. A quiet despair that hid deeper struggles with mental illness.
Ben owned the domain hoodies.com.au and decided to do something useful with it. He built a social enterprise that turned Melbourne's famous street art into wearable designs, with proceeds going directly to Concern Australia's Steps Outreach Service — a program whose workers and volunteers have been walking alongside homeless young people at Flinders Street Station since 1985. The project received some good media attention and raised over $10,000 for the cause at launch and was handed to Concern Australia to run.
Eventually, the original site Hosier Hoodies site wound down — and honestly, so did the idea. The people on the front lines were too busy doing the actual work to manage an online store, and life moved on.
Ten years on, the need hasn't diminished.
But people like Anne Mitchell, the longstanding manager of Steps Outreach Service, never stopped. For decades she has been meeting young people where they are — on the streets, in crisis, at their lowest — and helping them find a way forward. The drive and discipline to devote your life to doing good isn't in all of us. But ten years on, the need to support those making a difference is greater than ever.
It was time to evolve the concept to meet those needs.
